Office environments are generally considered lower risk than construction or manufacturing sites, but medical emergencies can — and do — happen anywhere. Cardiac arrest, strokes, severe allergic reactions, trips and falls, and choking incidents are all genuine possibilities in any workplace. With UK ambulance services averaging 8–14 minutes for an emergency response in urban areas, having a trained first aider who can intervene immediately is not just a legal requirement — it could save a colleague's life.
Offices across Berkshire, Surrey and Hampshire increasingly recognise that first aid training also contributes to a positive workplace culture. Employees who feel their employer takes wellbeing seriously are more engaged and more likely to stay. First aid training is a visible, tangible investment in your people.
Beyond physical first aid, the modern office workplace has seen a significant increase in mental health challenges. Stress, anxiety and depression are leading causes of workplace absence. Mental Health First Aiders — trained to recognise the signs of mental ill health and provide appropriate support — are becoming an essential part of corporate wellbeing strategies.
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require every employer to provide adequate first aid provision. A risk assessment must determine whether an appointed person, an EFAW-trained first aider or a full FAW-qualified first aider is needed, based on factors including the number of staff, the nature of the work, and the proximity to emergency services.
For most offices, Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is the appropriate qualification. HSE guidance suggests that for low-risk workplaces with fewer than 25 employees, an appointed person may be sufficient, though having at least one EFAW-trained first aider is strongly recommended. Offices with 25–100 employees should have at least one first aider; larger offices need one first aider per 100 staff.
Importantly, first aid cover must be maintained when qualified first aiders are absent. This means offices should ideally have more first aiders than the minimum to ensure cover during holidays, sickness and remote working days. The rise of hybrid working arrangements requires businesses to consider first aid provision for all working scenarios.
