First Aid on the High Street

First Aid on the High Street
Being a first aider is not about having all the answers or pretending to be a doctor. It is about being willing to help when something happens in front of you on the high street — someone collapses, a child is injured, an elderly person falls or a shopper suddenly becomes unwell. Sometimes the most important thing is giving first aid; sometimes it is calling 999, keeping people calm and staying with the person until help arrives.

These things can happen in the middle of an ordinary day, surrounded by people who may not know what to do. Training gives you the confidence to step forward instead of hoping that somebody else will help. You may never need to use your skills, but if you do, you could make a frightening moment safer and more manageable for someone who really needs you.

You do not need a uniform, a large first-aid bag or a dramatic soundtrack playing in the background. You simply need to notice that someone needs help and be prepared to take the first step. On a busy high street, that small act of kindness can make a huge difference.
